Active Kids Are Healthy Happy Kids

As our summer winds down after an earthquake, extreme heat,  and a hurricane and as our children settle into another school year, a different issue of increasing importance is being discussed on Capitol Hill and throughout the country.

Children today spend less time outdoors than any generation in human history, devoting just four to seven minutes a day, on average, to unstructured outdoor play. This lack of physical activity has led to serious health problems. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has tripled in the last three decades.

We must do our part as a community to support and strengthen youth sports and ensure that our nation’s youth have every opportunity to learn the valuable lessons that sports and healthy recreation opportunities offer.

 The No Child Left Inside and the Healthy Kids Outdoors movements represent two additional developments aimed at reconnecting children with nature and getting them active and outdoors.

Parks and Recreation advocates are encouraged to monitor and support these initiatives designed to reverse childhood obesity epidemic and get young people outside, active, and healthy.   It is our responsibility to provide our communities with programs for our youth to promote  positive behaviors and to provide them with safe accessible places to play, learn, and develop.

Lower Southampton Township Parks and Recreation will become a leader in outdoor programs and activities throughout the year at little or no cost to the residents of our township. Some examples of these programs are Nature Journals, Bird Watching, Sketch Some Nature, Colors of Nature, Night Colors,  
Animals Tracks, Feasterville Family Scavenger Hunt, Bug Box, Artificial Nesting Structures, Critter Condos, Water Organisms, Field Trips, Wildlife Around Us, Plants Around Us, Music of the Earth, Sounds of Nature, Outdoor Overnight Campout, Science Around Us, Field Day, Community Service Program for Teens/ Prevention and Intervention, Let’s Go Green, The Circle of Life, It’s Your World, Recycling Journey, outdoor camp programs, and fitness programs.

These programs will be offered in our upcoming Spring/Summer Calendar. Together we can change the world.

In addition to these new initiatives, Lower South has been served by the Lower South Athletic Association for decades. LSAA is an inclusive organization.  Every member of LSAA should know that no child will be turned away from participation due to inability to pay registration fees. If you have any doubt, please contact an LSAA Board Member and your inquiry will be treated in the strictest confidence. LSAA is a not for profit organization of community residents banded together to provide for the betterment and development of the youth in the community through athletic activities. LSAA offers baseball, basketball, cheerleading, flag football, fundraising, soccer, and softball.
